Capturing the Spirit of the State
In 1971, a bold idea was born—to capture the spirit of a state often overlooked but deeply unforgettable. What began as North Dakota Horizons magazine, founded by the Greater North Dakota Association (today, the Greater North Dakota Chamber), the publication set out to tell the stories of a place defined not just by geography, but by grit, beauty and heart.
Today, North Dakota magazine is a vibrant, full-color celebration of everything that makes this state extraordinary — its people, its places, its flavors, its traditions, and its rich, layered history. Since 2003, the team at Clearwater Communications has brought these stories to life, and in 2013, they took full ownership — ensuring those stories would continue to thrive.
Different Name, Same Great Publication
In 2026, the name North Dakota Horizons was set aside for something bolder, something more complete: North Dakota magazine. Because this state is more than a horizon—it’s the golden glow of a prairie sunrise, the stillness of a winding river, the drama of the Badlands, and the quiet magic found in places only locals truly know. The new name embraces it all.
A Timeless Treasure
North Dakota magazine isn’t just read — it’s kept, treasured and passed along. For many loyal readers, each issue becomes a time capsule of pages filled with stories worth revisiting and images worth remembering. It’s a gift sent across miles to those who’ve left, and a connection held tightly by those who stay.
What makes it different? It doesn’t skim the surface. It dives deeper into the stories behind the stories. Into the people who shape the state. Into the history that still echoes today. As a subscriber-supported publication, it has the freedom to focus on meaning, not just moments.
Two Storytellers
Annie Bennett and Kylie Blanchard — friends since 1999, who first crossed paths at Triangle Y Camp in Garrison — have spent nearly a decade shaping the voice of the magazine. Their shared love for North Dakota and genuine curiosity about its people bring authenticity to every page.
Annie’s journey has taken her from North Dakota State University to Glasgow, Scotland, and back again — but her heart never strayed far from home. In her free time, she enjoys being at the lake, reading, dreaming of the next New Kids on the Block concert or visits to Disney World, and spending time with her family and pets.
Kylie graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead and has used her background in writing and eye for detail to bring stories to life with clarity, humor and heart. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, working on her green thumb in the garden, planning a good practical joke, dressing her porch goose, and walking her dog.
A long-lasting friendship and love for their home state has made working with North Dakota magazine a privilege and honor for them both. Together, they don’t just edit a magazine. They tell the story of North Dakota one issue, one voice and one unforgettable story at a time.
